Get to Know Pacifica – Katherine Van Gunst
This week in Pacifica’s “Get to Know” series, we are highlighting Katherine Van Gunst. Katherine is an associate in Pacifica’s Public Finance group, where she focuses on tax-exempt general obligation and revenue bonds for governmental issuers.
Why did you choose your area of practice and what do you like most about it?
I came to public finance after practicing for several years in civil litigation. Although I enjoyed my time as a litigator, I was looking for a more collaborative work environment where I could still make a positive contribution. Working in public finance, I get to play a small role in helping to bring more affordable housing and other needed infrastructure to our region. The work is interesting and challenging, and I have the pleasure of working with a wonderful team.
Why did you choose to practice law at Pacifica Law Group?
I chose Pacifica because of its reputation for stellar work, and strong commitment to clients and the surrounding community, and because the people who work here are fantastic.
What kinds of volunteer, philanthropic, or community events are important to you?
I volunteer as the assistant coach for one of my kids’ soccer teams, and I am a co-chair of the Grants Committee with their school’s PTSA.
What hobbies and activities do you participate in outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to spend time outdoors—biking, hiking, and snowboarding—with friends and family. I grow a vegetable garden from seed every summer. And in 2023, I am hoping to get back to playing on a soccer team—watching my kids play, I’ve realized that I miss it!
